In the early 1960's, the once popular Theatre Royal was turned into offices, and despite attempts to save it, it was lost forever. Fortunately a man named Mr G.V.Northcott worked hard, together with the University to turn a site into a fully functioning Theatre and Arts Centre.

The Northcott officially opened on November 2nd, 1967, with "The Merchant of Venice". The theatre has seen many famous faces over the years, George Sewell, Diana Rigg, Bob Hoskins, Honor Blackman, John Nettles & Patrick Mower to name but a few. It has also staged hundreds of performances to thousands and thousands of theatre goers.

The main auditorium seats more than 400 people. The staff consists of around 20 full time members, with lots of other part-timers.
